In the Paper
I'm on the cover of 24H Vancouver today, pictured mid-installation. There's a pdf here.
The text reads:
Irish artist and architect Kevin Walsh tries to uncover the invisible layer of space made by surveillance cameras through an art installation Surveilling Public Space at the Interurban Gallery on East Hastings Street. “The assumption is you’re guilty if you’re being observed,” he said. “It’s something akin to being searched.”

Installation No. 1
Trial run of an idea for an installation, in space graciously provided by PS² in Belfast. A great opportunity to iron out technical and not-so-technical (paint-related) issues.Monday, November 2, 2009
Exhibiting/Installing in PS² studios, Belfast
Interesting series of one-day workshop/installation/exhibits organised for the next few weeks in PS². Hope to figure out some technical issues andd explore this idea a bit further.

Studies for an installation
The aim is to indicate surveilled space by applying paint to surveilled surfaces, and then to catalogue a variety of spatial conditions.

Dun Laoghaire
Some work of ours from over at Public Space Mapping Group relating to surveillance.

I basically photographed and then mapped the locations and type of security camera, taking note of the cones of space visible to each camera. This a technique I hope to take further with the Dublin city centre map.

This is the camera map combined with other information; graffiti, areas of public drinking, open/closed facades; and areas where these conditions coincide, indicating under-utilised spaces.
